Coach's Corner

The Full Story

Hi, my name is Abby Monson and I am from Lakeville, Minnesota. Minnesota is about 10 hours away from here and it is a pretty cold place compared to Michigan. Volleyball brought me to Michigan and I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunities I have been able to have here.

I have been playing organized volleyball since 2nd grade all the way through to college. I started my career off by playing with a local team based out of my hometown and then when I was 13 decided to start playing at a higher-level club program called Northern Lights. I played at Northern Lights for 6 years and it was a wonderful experience. At Northern Lights, I was able to win a Junior National Championship, place 3rd at Nationals my senior year, and was named an All-American.

My high school team was very successful throughout my career. I made varsity in 8th grade and started all five years in my high school career. My high school team won two state championships and was runner-up one year. After high school and club volleyball, I looked to further my career in the sport, so I decided I wanted to play at Michigan State University.

Since coming to MSU I have been able to gain more knowledge about the sport and have been able to face some of the best competition in the country and was able to experience an Elite 8. In December 2018, I became Michigan State University alumni and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising-Management. This December, I will finish up as the MSU Graduate Assistant Coach and will graduate in May with a Master’s Degree in Education, Sports Coaching, and Leadership.

I recently accepted a job for Harlo Products, which is based out of Grandville, Michigan. I couldn’t be more excited to be permanently moving to Grand Rapids and to start this new chapter in my life.
